"How I never know what I want," she muttered. "Never. It's like the curse of my entire life."

"Well, what're you deciding over? Maybe I can help," he said, smiling.

"Whether I want to know what you're thinking." Feeling, really, but she couldn't bring herself to say that. She sipped her tea and closed her eyes again as the usual little shudder of pleasure went through her.

"I'm tired but this tea is helping," he answered, shrugging before looking over at her in confusion. "Is that what you meant? You could've just asked me, Beth. Are you okay?"

"You always ask me that," she pointed out, taking another swig of tea. "And I'm always pretty much the same." Perpetually irritated, overthinking everything, and secretly just about as deeply lonely as a person could possibly be. She looked at the tree across the room. "We gotta get that thing in some water or there ain't gonna be nothing left tomorrow."

"Hey, quit changing the subject -- I'll take care of it before I go to sleep. Now, what'd you say you were thinking about?" he persisted.

Macbeth was a difficult person by nature, even more so at Christmastime, and when people--especially Risk--got all persistent, her ability to be difficult was limitless. She scowled into her teacup and muttered, "Nothing."

"Liar," muttered Risk, shooting her a playful look.

She stuck out her tongue at him like she had momentarily turned into Jo. "Drink your tea."

She sighed, crossed her arms, looked up at him, then down at her tea, then up at him again. "If you wanted," she muttered almost inaudibly. "To try that whole...date thing...still. We could do that. If, you know...the offer's still open."

Risk stared at her for a couple of seconds before grinning widely. "The offer's still open," he said, trying not to sound too excited.

Her entire body relaxed as if she'd just taken a giant gulp of tea. "Good," she muttered. Then took a sip of tea. Then actually, genuinely, voluntarily smiled. "Good." Suddenly the scrawny little Christmas tree didn't look so pathetic after all.

"How does next weekend sound?" he asked eagerly. "And you better not change your mind!"

"I won't change my mind," she assured him stoutly, even as she started to panic right on cue and wonder if she'd lost her mind. "Um...where should we go? Do I have to wear...something?" She had to own at least one dress that wasn't black.
