She'd been playing for several hours today, but now, after the lunch crowd began to drift out of the park and back to their lives, Birdie saw that only a few measly coins sat glinting in her open violin case.
Sighing, she settled down onto the bench where she played, pulling the case into her lap and gathering up the coins into her palm. Not a good day's earning, but it might at least get her a sandwich for lunch.

"Aw, you're done?" said Ershey, breathless from her run as she sat next to the girl on the bench. Script had told her about a violinist at Central Park but she hadn't been expecting someone their age. By the looks of it, she might as well been a newsie.

Birdie looked up at the girl in surprise. "Oh, um," she mumbled, eyes wide, "I didn't know there was anyone still out here." She picked up her violin again and tucked it under her chin, giving Ershey a small, hesitant smile. "I can play something for you, if you'd like."

"Really?" smiled Ershey excitedly, figuring she'd give the girl more payment than usual for playing for her.

"Sure," Birdie smiled back. She settled back onto the bench. "Any requests?"

"I, uh, don't know much about that kind of thing..." muttered Ershey. "Just surprise me. I'm sure I'll like whatever it is."

Birdie nodded and began to play a light little melody, unconsciously closing her eyes as she performed.

Ershey smiled as she began to play. She felt herself slowly relax, amazed at how well could play the violin. She wasn't even surprised when a few passerbys stopped and simply listened to her.

As Birdie played the last note, she opened her eyes with a sheepish expression. She lowered the violin and nodded her thanks to a couple who tossed a coin into her violin case, then turned to smile at Ershey. "I hope it was okay."

"It was more than okay!" said Ershey, giving her a reassuring smile. "You even got a couple more people to listen to you! And money too."

"Money is always good," Birdie laughed. She picked up the coin and added it to the small pile in her hand. "I may even have enough to spring for pie for lunch."

"Well, this should cover it," said Ershey, realizing she hadn't given her anything as she handed her a couple more coins.

Birdie looked at the coins, then shook her head and smiled. "The song was free." She held out her hand to shake. "I'm Birdie, by the way. Birdie Sims."

"Adri... well, I go by Ershey. Y'know how newsie nicknames go," she smiled, taking her hand. "And are you sure? I asked you to play when you were about to leave..." Although, she had another idea if she turned her offer down again.

Birdie nodded. "I'm sure. You earned me some extra money anyway," she grinned.
