"Sounds like any boarding house, if you ask me," chuckled Ershey as the lodging house came into view.
((Happy new year!!!))

Birdie laughed a little and looked up at the lodging house. "How long have you lived here?" she asked, glancing over at Ershey.

"Just a couple months," she answered, trying to see if she could spot any newsies nearby. "Some of the other newsies have been here for years."

"Everyone must be very close, then," Birdie said as she eyed the building.

"I guess you can say that, yeah. Most people are, anyways," she smiled as she opened the door for her.

She followed Ershey into the lodging house, holding her violin case to her chest as she began looking around her. "Do you think there'll be room for me here? It looks busy..."

"There's always room," she smiled, leading her upstairs towards the girls' bunkroom. "Besides, people always move in and out. Just look for an unused bed, I'm sure there's one here somewhere..."

Birdie peered into the bunkroom as Ershey pushed the door open. The rows of beds, in various states of disarray, made her mouth fall slightly open.
"Gracious," she mumbled. "There must be a lot of newsies living here."

"Hey, you'll have a lot of friends," said Ershey reassuringly as she walked inside and tried to look for an unused bed.

Following behind her, Birdie looked between each row of beds curiously, holding her case to her chest. "That's true. It'll be a nice change, maybe."
She sidestepped a shoe in the middle of the aisle. "It was only my parents and me back in Queens, and the boarding house I'm at now is pretty empty."

"This'll be a big change for you, then, huh?" she asked, spotting a clean and unused-looking bed not a couple of rows down. "Have you lived with anyone else other than your family?"

She shook her head with a little furrow forming between her eyebrows. "Never. I've only been on my own for a couple of months now..."

"You seem like a pretty patient person... I think you'll be fine. This one looks empty," said Ershey, looking at the top bunk. "You just gotta get up there, though. Better than nothing!"

"I think I can manage," Birdie said with a smile. She pushed the case up onto the mattress and then clambered up onto the bunk to test it. "This should work perfectly. Thanks, Ershey."

"Don't worry about it," she smiled. "Just don't get into too much trouble around here."
