Taking Jack's suggestion, Birdie cleared out a spot for herself in the attic for practicing. She'd already played a couple of shows at Irving Hall, but, being raised on Mozart and his lot, she wasn't quite used to dance-hall music.
The attic was the perfect place to play the violin, if one didn't mind the dust, the chill, and the occasional glimpse of a rat. She settled in by the window, wiped some of the grime from the panes, and started to play.

Jack was sitting on his bunk, sketching out the window with the curtains blowing into the room when he heard the violin playing. He smiled, so Birdie had taken him up on it. Soon the bunkroom began to grow quiet. He chewed on his bottom lip, maybe he should go up there?

This music was proving harder than she'd expected -- even humming along didn't seem to help. Birdie made a face at her sheet music as she played, and stamped her foot in frustration. It looked like this was going to be a long practice.

Jack headed up to the attic and of course knocked before entering. "Having trouble?"

Birdie lowered her violin and smiled over at Jack from the window. "A little bit. I wasn't bothering you, was I?"

"Not at all, I wanted to come up and see how you were doing," He smiled at her. "It sounds good."

She made a face and set her violin down on its case. "Thanks, but it sounds awful." She took a seat on an old chair by the window. "Hopefully no one will notice."

"It don't sound awful...but then again I know nothing about playing the violin," He said with a laugh and then walked into the room sitting down across from her.

"I don't know a thing about playing this kind of violin," Birdie sighed as she folded up the sheet music. "I'm lucky the conductor is desperate enough for a violinist that he'll keep me anyway."

"You'll get it, I have faith in you. See you're more annoyed than anything that you're having a hard. Just keep practicing." He said encouragingly.

She looked up at him and smiled, biting her lip. "Thanks, Jack." Tucking a piece of hair behind her ear, she sat back in the chair. "Did the papers sell well today?"

"As well as usual, I got through my hundred just fine, so I got me some pocket change for awhile. When you start playing down in the pit?" He cracked open the attic window and lit a cigarette.

"I played last night, but luckily it was a song I already knew." She pulled her feet up into her chair. "Our neighbor in Queens used to sing it."

"Yeah?" He smiled at her, "Well that's good. I'm sure it was real great, Birdie."

Birdie laughed a little, grinning back at him. "You're very sweet."
