Pie Eater took a table at Irving Hall where he could see the dancing girls -- of varying levels of talent, sadly, ranging from the tolerable to the outright pathetic -- and enjoy his dinner for the evening in peace.
His ma would box his ears if she saw him tonight, but Pie pushed back that little twinge of guilt. Perhaps whiskey wasn't the most nutritious of meals, but it kept him warm, and it soothed the bruises he had all over him thanks to a particularly close boxing match in the park yesterday.

Jack saw Pie sipping his whiskey all alone and decided to drop in on the other Manhattan newsboy, "Hey Pie...came for the show?"

"Heya Cowboy," Pie said, looking up as Jack approached the table. "Just celebratin'. Wanna drink?"

"Sounds good to me," Jack said with a grin. He was there to listen to Birdie play even though she'd made it clear that he wouldn't be able to hear just her down there in the pit.

Pie waved one of the waiters over and ordered another couple of drinks, then sat back in his chair. "How've you been, Jack?"

"Won a fight yesterday, against ole Red McGrew." Pie grinned proudly and took a drink from his glass. "Got two dollars in winnings."

Jack whistled, "That is a pretty penny, I'd be out celebrating too," He clinked glasses with Pie with a huge grin on his face.

Pie laughed, then settled back in his chair. "So brings you out to the Hall tonight, Cowboy?"

Jack cleared his throat and smiled, he couldn't help it. "Believe it or not, a girl." He took a sip of his drink. "She plays the violin."

Pie struggled not to snort. "You're not talking about little Birdie, are you, Jack?" He grinned.

"I just might be." He smiled. "She's sweet." He said.

Pie lifted both his eyebrows at that. Jack Kelly was sweet on tiny little Birdie Sims? That was something. "She is sweet," he agreed, but "sweet" wouldn't exactly be the word he'd use to describe her. Innocent? Yes. Naive? Definitely. Carefully, Pie set his glass down. "But she's a little, um... sheltered, Cowboy."

"I know that...I ain't looking to corrupt her Pie." He said and shook his head. "There's something about her...I dunno."

Pie's eyebrows rose higher. "You aren't?" He could hardly believe girls were worth any trouble if they weren't being corrupted, or already rather corrupt.
