Firecracker wandered quietly through Central Park, taking in all the rich golds, reds, and oranges of the leaves now that fall had finally arrived. She took in a deep breath and couldn't help but let a smile creep slowly across her face. There was just something about the smell of fall that made everything seem better than it was before. Maybe it was the colors. Maybe it was the promise of change. Regardless of what the reasoning, nothing could quite compare to fall.
After wandering down through the winding paths of the park, she came to a small group of rocks jutting out into the lake. Carefully, she climbed out onto the rocks and sat, her feet hovering precariously over the water.

Tara was chasing what had to be the last butterfly of the season. She'd been chasing it for two blocks, net in one hand, jar in the other. At last, it landed on a rock by the lake, and she swooped down her net and triumphantly captured it, transferring it into the jar and screwing on the lid. "Success!" she announced loudly--then blushed when she saw another girl sitting quietly on the rocks. "Uh, don't mind me."

Fire looked up at the other girl and smiled just a little, barely able to help but let out a small laugh. "Oh, don't you worry about a thing," she replied kindly. "I'm pretty sure that I would've done the same thing just now if I were you."
She shrugged a little and looked out over the lake again. It seemed so calm for the time being, aside from the occasional leaf the would tumble down from a tree to disturb the water's surface. "Pretty soon, there won't be any more butterflies."

"I know," she sighed, settling down on a rock to examine her catch. It was a tiger swallowtail--not bad, for the last of the season. "I'll miss them. But...snowball fights!" she said brightly. "And crackling fires, and hot chocolate...and Christmas!"

"And cold! And shivering," Fire added jokingly. Maybe she was just a pessimist when it came to these things, but she was never a big fan of the cold. "I can live with one snowball fight though --- but just one. I don't know about you, but I'll be spending most of my time in front of one of those crackling fires."
She turned her head to look up at the girl, her eyes squinting slightly in the sun. "Are you from around here?"

"Upper West Side," she said. "I live at a boarding school. Miss Porter's." She shuddered. "For now, at least. I sort of have a habit of not going to class. Because, you know...new friends, adventures...butterflies..."

A slightly surprised look came over Fire's face. "You go to one of those fancy boarding schools?" She paused, laughing just a bit. "You know, almost any girl I know would kill to go to one of those places and here you are, all set up in one, and you're chasing butterflies."
She shook her head slowly, amused. "I suppose the grass really IS greener, isn't it?"

Tara winced. "I know. I should be grateful, study hard, make the best of all my opportunities..." She sighed. "I'm just not very good at it, I guess. Studying. Or sitting still in general." Her fingers drummed on the side of the rock, demonstrating her point. "If I could switch places with someone who wanted it more, I would."

"Unfortunately, life isn't all that easy," Fire agreed. As much as she wanted to tell this girl that she should treat what she has like a gift, she couldn't help but feel at least a little bit bad for her. After all, they were almost in the same situation wanting something that they can't really have -- or, at the very least, shouldn't pursue. "Trust me, I know."

Tara gave her a somewhat sad smile. "Thanks. How 'bout you? Do you live around here?"

"Around here? No. I mean, I used to, but I live downtown now. In one of the lodging houses," she explained with a shrug. "I still like to come up here quite a bit though, it's a lot easier to be alone up here than it is down there."

She perked up at the mention of a lodging house. "You don't live at Duane Street, by any chance? I have friends there." She realized how odd it was for a girl of her class to have friends among the newsies, but she'd pretty much gotten used to the strange looks by now.

"That's the one," she answered with a nod. "I've only been there for a short time now, so I haven't met too many of the others just yet." She paused and couldn't help but laugh. "Duane Street is quite a journey from that school of yours, don't you think?"

"It is," she agreed, flushing a little. "I, uh...came looking for some old friends. Goblin and Wraith? We were neighbors, growing up. And then I met some of the others...Moonshine, Risk...Jack..." Her blush deepened.

"Out of all those names, I only know one," Fire laughed. "Wraith. We met on the roof one day. Other than her, I can't say I've met any of the others.... She seems nice enough though."
