Fire nodded, her heart racing as she leaned forward with her hands on her knees to try to catch her breath. "A tie," she agreed before slowly opening the door to the shop.

Tara followed her in, still trying to catch her breath, and marched up to the counter, smiling at the fussy old woman who stood behind it. "We'll take a dozen--caramel, coconut, and, uh, some buttercreams for good measure. Ooh, and a nice box with ribbons and everything." The woman looked kind of bemused but went about preparing the order.

"Buttercreams? We're getting fancy now," Fire replied playfully, lightly nudging the other girl with her elbow. She carefully reached into her pocket and dug out some money to hand to Tara. "That should cover half of it."

"You don't have to!" Tara protested, blushing slightly. She got a rather ample allowance, after all, and this girl was a newsie. Very few things embarrassed Tara or struck her as awkward, but economic disparity was one of them.

"No, I insist," Fire continued, still holding out the money to the other girl. "I wouldn't feel right taking credit for part of a gift if the only part I took in it was standing here while you bought it."

"Fair enough," Tara agreed, accepting the money with another cordial bow. Curtsying had never come naturally to her. She paid for the box of chocolates and peeked inside. "No heartbreak could survive this onslaught of deliciousness," she announced, leading the way out of the store and down the street again.

"I agree," Fire nodded, a large smile on her face as she followed the other girl back out to the street. "It's almost impossible to eat an entire box of chocolates without a smile on your face!"

"Good thing I got the ribbons, or I'd be tempted to sample one," Tara confessed, tucking the box under her arm. "Well, maybe there will be something good in the kitchen. Wraith says her brother's girl is some kind of baking goddess."

"I've heard stories about her baked goods, too," Fire agreed quickly. "I can't say that I'd had the chance to sample some of them, but I've heard they're the stuff of legend!"

"Clearly, we have to meet this girl," Tara said, strolling along beside Fire. "Possibly become best friends with her. And find out how on earth she puts up with Sebastian Pearson."

Fire couldn't help but laugh at Tara's comment, despite the fact that she had yet to even actually meet Wraith's brother. "That's GOT to be a reason!" she agreed, her feet carrying her a little faster back towards the lodging house.
She paused briefly and couldn't help but laugh. "Honestly, I don't know why I said that just now... I don't even know the guy!"

Tara giggled. "Sorry! I've filled you with prejudice. He's really not so bad. I mean, when the chips are down and it's us against the world, we're friends. But the rest of the time, we can't get along for the life of us." She checked the box to make sure the ribbons were secure. "Ever know anyone like that?"

"On and off through the years I've met people like that, yeah," Fire replied with a nod. "Not the type I usually deal with, mind you, but we all run into them sooner or later."
Fire looked away slowly, realizing that maybe she sounded as if she thought she lived in some sort of fantasy land where everyone else was decent towards each other. In truth, it was because she really only socialized with a handful of people. "I usually keep to myself," she explained.

"How come? You seem really nice!" Tara said, unable to grasp the concept of someone less social than herself. She loved meeting people, being around people, befriending everyone in sight. It made life exciting.

Fire couldn't help but blush at thanks. "Thanks," she replied bashfully. "You seem really nice too, if I may say so myself. But... I don't know, I just don't generally do well with people that I don't already know."
