"Great!" Tara collected her butterfly net and jar and practically bounced along beside Fire, wondering how the newsies were doing. It had been a while since that...awkward incident with Wraith, the thought of which took just a little bit of the bounce out of her step.

Sensing something was a little off, Fire slowed down slightly. "Are you okay?" she asked softly, her eyes still fixed on the path in front of her.

"Hmm? Of course! Just...wondering how Wraith's doing. Last time I saw her, she was a little..." Growing up surrounded by upper-class hypocrisy, Tara had come to loath half-truths and euphemisms. "Well, she was drunk and sad and lonely."

"Oh, was she?" Fire asked, a hint of sadness in her voice. "Well, I only just met her the other day..." She sighed and chewed lightly on the inside of her cheek. She couldn't help but wonder what could've been bothering her new friend so much. Wait, were they even really friends anyway? They had really only just met...

"But I'm sure she's cheered up by now," Tara said with a smile of eternal optimism. "She's pretty tough, she can beat back a little heartbreak. Maybe I should buy her some chocolate on the way."

"Heartbreak?" Fire asked, her interested piqued. "Well, if I know anything, it's definitely that chocolate helps cure anything! Do you know what kind she likes the best?"

"She was positively devoted to caramels when we were children," Tara mused, "but...she's changed a lot. For all I know, she might be all about coconut now."

"So, how about we get a couple of each then, just in case?" Fire offered with a playful shrug. "She's guaranteed to like at least one!"

"True!" Tara grinned. "This is a good plan. There's a nice little shop just a couple blocks from here--I stop there sometimes to get sweets for my mother. Mostly to soften the blows of my school reports."

"Well, let's see what they have then, shall we?" Fire replied, smiling as she waited to follow after the other girl.

"It's right on our way," Tara assured her, heading off in the proper direction, and cheerfully ignoring the stares she got for walking around with a glass jar and a butterfly net. And the whistles. It was too much to hope that two pretty girls with flaming red hair could walk down the street without a whistle or two.

Fire, too, heard the whistles, but chose to ignore them. Her eyes remained fixed on the road ahead of them with the hope that the whistles would stop if she didn't acknowledge them. "Some people are so rude," she remarked under her breath.
Finally, she saw what appeared to be a candy store a couple of blocks away. "Is that it?"

"That's it!" she confirmed, beaming, and a mischievous glint came into her eye. "Race you?"

"Oh, gosh!" Fire said with a laugh. Before she could even answer, she already found herself in a race with the other girl. Her hands balled into fists as she continued to run, trying to keep up with the other girl.

Tara was pretty fast on her feet, but she was hampered by various skirts and petticoats--and dodging many other pedestrians who gave her dirty looks. By the time she and Fire reached the store, she was flushed and grinning. "What do you think? A tie?"
