Fire looked back down at the butterfly in the jar and thought for a moment. "It is the last butterfly of the season," she mused thoughtfully. "I know if I were that butterfly, I know I'd probably want to spend the last of my time enjoying the weather." She paused, her eyes still fixed on the butterfly. "That's the joy of being a butterfly, if you think about it. They really have no idea how cold the world can really be. They're never around long enough to find out."

"I guess they are kind of lucky when you think about it that way," Tara said slowly, impressed by Firecracker's philosophy. She unscrewed the lid and held up the jar. "Go free, little butterfly! Soak up the last of the autumn sun!" she cried dramatically as the swallowatil went winging off into the bright sky.

"Yeah...." Fire agreed, her voice soft as she watched the butterfly slowly fly away and into the breeze. "Sometimes, I don't think I'd mind being a butterfly." She paused, laughing at her own silliness. "Well, if it were at all possible."

"I say things like that fairly often," Tara admitted, "and people look at me like I've lost my mind. If I ever had one to begin with." She smiled sheepishly. "Is the world really that cold, though? Your world, I mean. I don't mean to pry. I'm very curious, but you can ignore me if you like, or make something up that's completely untrue. I'd quite understand."

"Oh, not all the time," Fire responded with a shake of her head. She glanced out over the still lake and tucked a piece of hair back behind her ear. "It has its moments when it's beautiful, I suppose. You know, like those days where the sun shine through the clouds at the just right angle and warms up the center of your back. But, the periods of cold are... well, I guess 'extreme' could be one way to describe it."
She took in a slow breath as her voice trailed off. "Sorry," she apologized quietly. "I'm talking entirely too much."

"Not at all!" Tara assured her. "You should hear me when I really get started. You're lucky I'm letting you get a word in edgewise! You know, you should be a poet or something," she added. "The way you describe things. It's really pretty. Sad, too. Like all the best poems."

Fire looked away, her face growing hot. "Oh, I don't know about that," she replied bashfully. "I really just say things how I see them. Anybody can do it, really. I'm not that special."

"I couldn't do it," Tara said frankly. "I mean, I usually tell things how I see them, too, but it just comes out painfully straightforward. That butterfly, for example, was black and orange. And that's about all I can come up with." She thought about it a moment. "Can't even think of a rhyme for it."

"Well... that's because nothing rhymes with 'orange,' you know," Fire replied playfully, a smirk finally returning to her face. "Besides, not all poetry has to rhyme. Sure, that's what everybody immediately thinks, but there are all different kinds of poetry -- at least that I've seen."

"True," Tara agreed. "I don't think it's my calling, though. I'm not sure what my calling is. I suppose I'm meant to be a socialite." She made a rather doubtful face.

"Wearing dresses all day, staying inside, and hosting tea parties?" Fire asked, her eyebrow arching. "There isn't much room for catching butterflies and mingling with us downtowners when you're doing that." She paused, letting herself laugh so the other girl could see that she was kidding.
She looked over at the other girl and smiled slowly. "There's nothing wrong with not knowing that you want. You have all kinds of time to try to figure that out. Just don't settle without exploring your options."

"You're right!" she agreed brightly, cheering up at the thought. "It's all about exploring your options." And she seemed to be full of inadvertent double entendres today. "Speaking of which, I'd better figure out what to do with myself for the rest of the day...too late to waltz into class now."

"Yeah, I don't think your beloved Miss Porter will like that," Fire agreed. Carefully, she rose back to her feet. "I should probably find my way back downtown. The only problem with the fall is that the night comes faster and faster everyday."

"I don't think I've even seen Miss Porter more than twice," Tara said with a smirk, getting up as well. "Too many tea parties, I guess. When I misbehave, they always send me to the deputy headmistress. Mind if I walk back with you, see who's around to be called on?"

"Oh, no, not at all," Fire answered with a slight shake of her head. "It's a long walk, gets kind of lonely after a while. The company could be.... nice."
