"That's, uh...that's part of it..." Beth frowned at all the brownie crumbs on the counter. Couldn't they have left even one? She scraped up some crumbs and leaned over to feed them to Jo, who giggled with delight.

"Do you know something that I don't, Beth?" said Ershey, finally looking at her friend.

Macbeth winced and looked at the floor. "Yeah, but...Ersh, he did me a favor today, all right? He looked out for me and Jo, and he could've gotten soaked 'cause of me. This secret of his, I only found out last night, I swear..." Although it seemed like years ago. "...and I owe him the chance to tell you himself."

Ershey sighed, shooting Macbeth a look. She kept quiet for a couple of minutes as she tried to process what Macbeth just 'told' her. What could Alec have possibly done this time?
"Is it... serious?" she finally asked after a couple of minutes.

Macbeth raised an eyebrow. "Depends on how you look at it, I guess..." At least it was legal, right? Very, very legal. "How 'bout you, Ersh? Done anything serious lately that I should know about?"
((Muahaha, touche!))

((Ooooooh, sneaky!!!))
Ershey cleared her throat, stopping mid-reach as she found some sort of jam inside the cupboard. "Excuse me?" she asked, glancing at Macbeth.

"I was there when you got home last night, 'member?" She crossed her arms. "Racetrack Higgins talks a lot when he's drunk."

"Dammit, Race," she muttered under her breath, grabbing the jam and setting it on the table. "What'd he say this time?"

"Enough," Beth said simply, unscrewing the top of the jam and cutting a thick slice of bread for Jo. "I just wanna know why you didn't tell me. I mean, don't I strike you as just the kinda friend you can go to and say, 'Beth, you gotta help me hide a body'?" She slathered on the jam.

"I, uh... it's not the first thing that comes to mind when I see my best friend," sighed Ershey. "B-but, er, really? Race said everything?"

"No," Macbeth admitted. "Some of it I found out another way, and for that, you're gonna hafta talk to Risk." She wiped off the knife and took Jo from Ershey's arms, setting her on the counter and tearing off a piece of the bread for her. She devoured it, and Beth turned back to her friend. "What'd that guy do to you, Ershey? I know I can't kill him again, but I can spit on his grave."

"He was blackmailing me," she finally admitted, grabbing the knife and dipping it in the jam. "I had to pay him every week or else... I mean, it's done, Macbeth. He's gone... and he won't be coming back. I'm sure."

"I wouldn't be so sure," Beth muttered. "You killed a cop, Ersh. You gotta know they'd be investigating the hell outta that." She grabbed a napkin to wipe jam off Jo's face and fed her another piece. "And apparently Tristan was involved? Tristan Shamien. Jo's father." She shook her head. "Seriously...what the hell is my life?"

"I didn't exactly kill him," she mumbled. "I was just there! I had to... lure him out?"

"Lure him out? Whose brilliant idea was that? You coulda died! Anything coulda gone wrong!" Macbeth glared at her. "And I never even woulda known what happened--I was still in London, and your letters would've just stopped..." The thought of Ershey in that kind of danger drove her crazy. "Well, anyway...now I know, and you oughta talk to Risk."
