"Right," she nodded hesitantly. "C-Can you ask Mush for me, please? I'd rather not see him right now..."

"'Course," Beth said, her mind still blown by the fact that there was trouble in paradise. She called for Jo and walked her and her crayons down the hall to Ershey's apartment, leaving Mush with instructions to give her lots of paper and keep her away from walls and tabletops.
"Ready?" she asked, coming back for Ershey.

"I guess I have to be," shrugged Ershey as they walked out of Macbeth's apartment and into the hallway. "So... you know this midwife 'cause of Rae?"

Macbeth nodded. "Her and me sorta delivered Sean together," she explained. "While your brother stood out in the hallway wondering what the hell was going on. It was a weird day." To say the least. "I've gone to her a few times since then when Jo had a cold or a fever. She knows what's she's doing."

"...Alec was there?!" muttered Ershey in disbelief. "I bet he didn't even know what was going on... speaking of Alec, how are you two doing, anyway?"

"Us two?" She never really thought about it. "Fine. We get along all right, we talk about our days, go drinking or dancing sometimes, take care of Jo. We don't have lousy sex," she added ambiguously, with a slight smirk.

"Too much information," chuckled Ershey, shaking her head at Beth. "You two seem like you're doing fine... so, are you two, uh, together?"

Beth shrugged. "What's that even mean? I never really knew. We've been raising a kid together for three years."

"See, now, I think that's unbelievable," muttered Ershey. "Who knew the two of you could work so well together?"

"Who knew I'd work well with anyone?" Macbeth said with a dry laugh. "I still don't know how he puts up with me every day. 'Specially when we're meeting new people." Her behavior toward strangers had improved only marginally over the years. "But, well...he's still there."
And she woke up happy every morning remembering it. She went to bed smiling over it. To most people, it might seem like she took him for granted, but she never had. Hell, she was still amazed every day that he wasn't gone yet.

"That just means one thing," said Ershey, smiling as she looked over at Beth. "I know you're going to hate it after I say it but I'll say it, anyway. Y'know that he loves you, right? He wouldn't be there if he didn't feel that way."

Macbeth blushed and looked at the ground for a while, amusing herself by kicking cans and bottles out of their way. "I always loved him, Ersh," she finally said. "Since our newsie days. I just...always knew what we had would never be 'normal' or 'traditional' or whatever, not if I was involved. And it ain't. But that's fine."

"And I think he's completely fine with that," said Ershey reassuringly. "Or else he still wouldn't be here. I know Alec. He wouldn't stick around for nothing. And you obviously aren't nothing to him. Especially, Jo. If someone told me this when we were newsies... I would've just laughed at them. But he's matured... surprisingly."

"It suits him," Beth said with a rare grin. "And how 'bout you and Mush? Youse two doing all right, other than this little, uh...bump in the road?"

Ershey nodded, smiling. "You were right earlier... kittens and rainbows," she chuckled. "He'll never let me out of his sight once he finds out if I really am pregnant... you know how protective he gets. I'll just have to explain everything later when we get back."
