Macbeth nodded. "Don't worry...if he gets too bad, you can always come over to my place. I'll say we're gonna stay in knitting or doing puzzles or something, and then we'll go out on the town and never breathe a word." She went a little cold when she realized they were already talking like Ershey's pregnancy was certain.

"You almost had me scared when you mentioned knitting," smirked Ershey, feeling a wave of nausea come back. She shrugged it off, refusing to let Macbeth worry about her more than she should.

"Ersh, I ain't got a bloody clue how to knit. Script makes all of Jo's socks for us." She eyed Ershey's face as they crossed the bridge. "You okay, love?"

"Just... give me a sec," she breathed, grabbing Beth's arm and steadying herself. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath before taking a step. "I'm fine, c'mon, where's the midwife?"

"You ain't fine," Macbeth said in alarm, draping an arm around Ershey to steady her. "She's only a block from here. See, there's the orphanage where Jo useta live...and here are the docks, with all those bloody newsboys staring at us..." She gave them her standard glare, and most of them had the grace to look away.

"I love your glare," said Ershey, ignoring Macbeth's first comment and urging her to walk faster. "Y'know that, right?"

"Aww, thanks, Ersh!" Beth was actually genuinely gratified by the compliment. But not distracted from her friend's pale face. "Almost there," she said soothingly. "You can see it from here." It looked like all the other tenements, of course, but she knew the one.

"Right," nodded Ershey, wondering what caused her to suddenly decide to walk all the way to Brooklyn. "You think she'll be busy? Y'know, 'cause we didn't let her know ahead of time?"

Macbeth raised an eyebrow and flashed her an evil smirk. "You think she'll stay busy if I tell her she ain't?" She helped Ershey down the street and up the steps to the tenement, leading her inside and--carefully--up the stairs.

"Beth, I can walk," chuckled Ershey as they reached the top of the stairs. "I'm probably pregnant, not disabled."

"You look like you're about to fall over," Beth snapped, then found herself wondering if she, not Mush, might end up being the overprotective one. She let go of Ershey reluctantly and knocked on the door.
"Yes?" The door opened, and a sharp-eyed older woman peered out. "Oh, it's you," she muttered when she saw Macbeth. "And you've brought a friend, hmm?"

"It's just nausea, Beth," muttered Ershey quietly before smiling at the midwife. "Hi ma'am. Beth here thinks I might be pregnant."

Mrs. Green clucked like a mother hen. "Well, let's get you inside and take a look at you, then." She hustled Ershey through the door, and Macbeth followed behind. Mrs. Green sat Ershey down on the couch and briskly launched into a list of questions. "Have you had any morning nausea? Mood swings? Strong food cravings? Missed a monthly period?"

Ershey looked at Mrs. Green, then to Macbeth and back to Mrs. Green. She took in a deep breath before contemplating each one of the questions that was just shot at her.
"I've had a lot of headaches... I actually felt a bit nauseated when we were walking over here. And yes on the mood swings, definitely having those," she answered, glancing over at Macbeth. "No huge food cravings but I've been wanting apples lately... and I don't think I've missed a period... then again, I stopped keeping track..."

Mrs. Green clicked her tongue angrily and shook her head. "You have to keep track of these things! Mark it on a calendar if you must. You won't know for certain until the bleeding doesn't come...but if you keep getting sick only in the mornings, with no other symptoms of illness, and if you can feel that something in your body is changing...well, then you might as well tell your husband to expect some company."
She crossed her arms over her chest and looked Ershey up and down. "You do have a husband, I hope?"
