"Yes!" answered Ershey, looking somewhat offended. She looked at her hands thoughtfully, trying to recall when was the last time she had her period. Once she realized that it had been weeks since she had it, her eyes widened as she looked over at Beth.

Macbeth caught her look and blanched. "You did miss one, didn't you?" She felt a sinking sensation in the pit of her stomach and tried really hard not to show it.
"How long?" Mrs. Green demanded at once. "Can't be too long, you aren't showing yet. But it would help if we could figure out when you'll be needing me for the birth."
"I'm gonna help," Beth said at once, glaring at the old woman as if daring her to argue.
Mrs. Green just looked up at the heavens for guidance. "I was afraid you'd say that."

"A couple weeks?" muttered Ershey uncertainly. She watched them exchange words, a confused look on her face.
"...Is that a bad thing? I trust Beth."

"She knows what she's doing, I'll give her that much," the old midwife grumbled. "Even if someone ought to cut out that insolent tongue of hers..."
"You'd be amazed how many times I've heard that," Beth snarked. "I'm surprised it ain't been cut into fifty pieces already. Just tell Adrianne here what to expect."
"We'll give you another eight months," Mrs. Green said more kindly, turning back to Ershey. "But if you have any unusual pains or bleeding before then, send someone for me right away. Give me your address, and I'll come by every so often anyway, just to see how you're getting along."

Ershey nodded, spotting a nearby notepad and scribbling down her address and name. She handed it over to Mrs. Green, still feeling quite overwhelmed. "So, does this mean... that I'm really pregnant?"

"Ever been a few weeks late before? If not, I'm afraid that's exactly what it means," Mrs. Green assured her.
Macbeth took a deep breath and squeezed Ershey's hand, giving her a reassuring smile. "This is good news, right? You'll be a great mother. Mush'll be over the damn moon."

"Right," she nodded, putting on her best smile. It was all suddenly hitting her at once. The idea of a tiny person growing inside her was so different yet exciting. She just hoped it didn't hurt too much.
"Thanks for having us, Mrs. Green," smiled Ershey. "Beth lives down the hall from me, so I'm sure I'll be fine."

"Right down the hall?" Mrs. Green looked halfway between impressed and pitying. "If you can put up with that, young lady, giving birth should be nothing to you," she said sardonically.
Macbeth gave her a look, handed Mrs. Green a couple of pennies for her time, and marched Ershey out of the apartment, taking a deep breath when the door was closed. "Well...now we know."

Ershey took in a deep breath and nodded. "Beth, I'm pregnant," she said, her eyes wide with fear. "It'll be okay, right? Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to be a mother but... giving birth scares the hell out of me."

Me too! Macbeth wanted to yell. Instead, she crossed her arms and tried to look tough. It was kind of her specialty, after all. "Ershey, you're calm and patient and practical...mosta the time. You're gonna be a champion at giving birth. And I've helped with this kinda thing before, and you know I'll be there for ya every step of the way."

"You better be," muttered Ershey, shooting Macbeth a look before linking arms with her. "Or else I wouldn't know what to do."

"I got it covered," Beth said, already longing for the evening, when Alec would get home and she could babble at him about how terrified she was. Sure, she'd done all right with Raven, but Rae was barely a casual friend then. Ershey was the dearest person in the world to her besides Alec and Jo. You can handle it, she scolded herself. Ada wasn't your fault.
She headed back toward the bridge, arm-in-arm with Ershey, and asked, "So...whatcha gonna name it?"

Ershey shrugged, wrinkling her nose as she pondered her answer. "Depends... if it's a boy or a girl. And what Mush wants to name it," she replied, glancing at Macbeth. "My parents did the A thing... Alec and Adrianne... not sure if I want to keep that going."

Beth thought about it. "A's a good letter. I grew up with a lotta them. Sister named Ada, friends down the hall named April and Alex...and, oh! Former gang leader called Archer." She couldn't help giggling a little. "I dunno what's left. Anne? Arthur? Amelia?"

"Alexa? Or... Ariana?" said Ershey, her eyes widening with excitement. "Oh, but what if it's a boy? I hope he won't turn out like Alec... well, too much. Uh, no 'fense."
